Question #4

Semiotics is the study of signs and science, it is the separation of the sign or signifier and signified. This image of a pipe is an example of semiotics as most people don't know what the writing says as it is written in French. When researching this image the writing says, "this is not a pipe." The obvious is that, this is in fact a pipe, but the artist wants you to look deeper into the image, and meaning. Rather than just taking everything for the literal meaning, the artist wants to viewer to be more analytical and to learn not to take everything in life literally. Maybe this pipe also has connotations of wealth and signifies past times of when pipes where seen as classifiers of wealth and class. Through the progression of ideology and common sense it can be interpreted that this is more than a pipe.
